Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials pose a potential threat to the health and safety of people, property and the environment and are present across many different industries. 

To ensure that your employees are able to work with hazardous materials in the safest way possible, their use is strictly regulated by a number of Codes, Regulations and Standards. You must identify hazardous materials, assess and control their risks in the workplace and safely store and transport them.

Generally, hazardous materials refer to chemicals, lead, mould and asbestos. More broadly they include:

• Dangerous chemical substances such as acids, caustic chemicals, disinfectants, detergents and cleaning products, pesticides and petroleum
• Glue, solvents and adhesives
• Cement and sealants
• Lead and lead oxides in paint coatings 
• Biological agents and potential biological hazards including mould, fungi and sewage
• Inhalable gases, fumes and dust 
• Asbestos
• Clandestine drug labs
• Stagnant water
