JTA Health, Safety & Noise Specialists is one of Australia’s trusted experts in asbestos air monitoring, asbestos monitoring and sample testing. We make sure every project meets strict health, safety, and regulatory standards.
At JTA we have qualified and licensed Asbestos Assessors and competent persons who have extensive experience gained on residential, commercial and industrial sites. They’ll follow strict protocols and use the latest equipment to ensure your air monitoring for asbestos is conducted to the highest standards. We are experts in asbestos identification, assessment and management.
As part of every asbestos monitoring project, air samples are collected in accordance with recognised standards, with all filters analysed in a NATA-accredited laboratory using the membrane filter method. Asbestos sample analysis is completed using techniques such as Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction to identify asbestos fibres in bulk samples.
JTA’s asbestos monitoring process includes clear records, open communication and quick reporting. This ensures you understand the results and any follow-up actions required.
Assesses levels of airborne asbestos fibres within the worker’s breathing zone to determine personal exposure during normal activities. Results identify whether exposure standards exceed the relevant exposure standard and whether additional control measures are required.
Evaluates airborne asbestos fibre concentrations near the work area while asbestos removal work is underway. These readings determine if containment systems such as negative-pressure enclosures, water suppression or local exhaust ventilation are effectively controlling fibre release.
Conducted once asbestos-containing materials have been removed or disturbed. Clearance monitoring confirms that airborne asbestos fibre levels are below the relevant clearance criteria, demonstrating that the area is safe for reoccupation and supporting the issue of a clearance certificate.
Background monitoring measures airborne asbestos fibre levels in the surrounding environment before, during or after asbestos-related work to identify any unintended fibre release and verify that control measures remain effective.
JTA’s asbestos monitoring services, including asbestos air monitoring, are backed by decades of experience across industrial, commercial and government projects.
Through our Detect. Protect. approach, we help clients identify airborne risks early and verify that control measures are working as intended. This proactive process helps ensure safe and efficient site operations while giving organisations confidence that compliance and productivity can work together.
When persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) undertake friable asbestos removal, the law requires asbestos air monitoring by an independent Licensed Asbestos Assessor. An independent Asbestos Assessor must monitor the air during and after the project and inspect the site to deem the removal complete and safe for reoccupation.
For Class B (non-friable) asbestos containing material, air monitoring is not mandatory but is strongly recommended during the clearance process to ensure control measures are working correctly and to confirm the area is suitable for reoccupation. In some circumstances, air monitoring may be required depending on the scope of the work and project-specific risks.
All testing must comply with relevant state and territory legislation.
Once clearance has been achieved, an asbestos clearance certificate is provided outlining the scope of removal, inspection details and air monitoring results, providing traceable evidence of compliance and protection for all parties involved.
Our Detect. Protect. framework underpins everything we do, from identifying risks to helping clients maintain ongoing compliance. It is a proven model built on more than 35 years of experience in workplace health, safety and environmental testing.

Background monitoring measures airborne asbestos fibre levels in the general environment to identify any unintended airborne release during or near asbestos-related work. It helps confirm site conditions are stable and that activities are not generating elevated fibre levels.
Exposure monitoring measures airborne asbestos fibres within a worker's breathing zone to assess personal exposure during work activities. It determines whether exposure remains below the occupational exposure standard and whether existing control measures are effective.
It is not legally required but is strongly recommended. Asbestos air testing helps determine whether airborne fibres are being effectively controlled. A competent person or Occupational Hygienist may undertake the required assessment where legislation permits. Air monitoring also provides confidence that control measures are working effectively during asbestos removal work.
Sample results can be made available within 24 hours where required. Our standard turnaround time for asbestos sample analysis is approximately seven days unless an alternative timeframe has been requested.
If airborne asbestos levels exceed acceptable limits, JTA will immediately notify the site contact and advise whether work should cease. We will recommend corrective actions such as additional cleaning, improved ventilation or revised removal methods before undertaking further asbestos air monitoring to confirm the effectiveness of those controls.
Asbestos air monitoring is mandatory during Class A (friable) asbestos removal and must be undertaken by an independent Licensed Asbestos Assessor. For Class B (non-friable) asbestos removal, air monitoring is not always mandatory but may be required depending on the project, client requirements or risk assessment. JTA can advise which monitoring requirements apply to your workplace.
Asbestos air monitoring should be undertaken by suitably qualified professionals with the appropriate competency and experience. JTA's Occupational Hygienists and Licensed Asbestos Assessors conduct asbestos air monitoring in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and applicable state and territory legislation.
An asbestos clearance certificate confirms that an independent Licensed Asbestos Assessor has inspected the work area and, where required, reviewed the air monitoring results before determining that the area is suitable for reoccupation. The certificate provides documented evidence that asbestos removal work has been completed in accordance with legislative requirements. Learn more about our Asbestos Clearance Inspections service.
