Where hearing protection is required in the workplace, audiometric testing is an ongoing obligation under OHS and WHS Noise Regulations. For many organisations, this means hearing tests are not a one-off activity, but a recurring part of managing noise exposure and protecting worker health.
Over time, relying entirely on external providers for screening audiometry can become costly and operationally restrictive. Training staff to conduct screening audiometry in-house offers a practical alternative, giving organisations greater control over scheduling, consistency and long-term compliance costs.
Screening audiometry is required wherever workers are exposed to noise levels that necessitate hearing protection. This testing must be conducted at prescribed intervals and managed in accordance with Australian legislation and standards.
By developing in-house capability, organisations can:
Schedule testing around operational demands rather than external availability
Respond more quickly to workforce changes or new starters
Reduce long-term costs associated with repeated outsourced testing
Maintain stronger oversight of hearing conservation programs
Importantly, in-house testing must still be performed by trained and competent personnel using appropriate methods and equipment.
JTA delivers a comprehensive two-day Screening Audiometry Training course designed to equip participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to conduct compliant workplace screening.
The next course will be held on 24 and 25 February 2026 at Royal Brighton Yacht Club.
The course is led by Jeremy Trotman, a highly respected industry practitioner with postgraduate qualifications in occupational hygiene and environmental management.
