Adopting Technology To Improve Your WHS

Technology is constantly evolving and plays an integral part in transforming the way we all work. It’s also being used for the successful management of health and safety in an organisation and there’s no doubt that it has reduced health and safety incidents. At JTA we are actively embracing technology to improve the way we conduct business as well as to improve the service we provide to our customers. Two projects have significantly changed the way we work and could be of interest and benefit to your business.

Protecting High-Risk Lone Workers

By law, employers must provide a safe workplace for their workers, so far as is reasonably practicable. The OHS/WHS Act’s define the meaning of ‘workplace’ as a place where work is carried out for a business or undertaking and includes any place where a worker goes, or is likely to be, while at work.

In addition to wanting to fulfil our duty of care, we also wanted to provide our consultants with peace of mind that they’re being looked after and cared for. We know that working alone, or in an isolated location, can increase the likelihood of a hazard or risk. It can also increase the severity of a workplace injury.

We therefore wanted to give our consultants who work alone a means to alert for help and so have started using an App for lone workers on their phones. The App provides a means of communication for a consultant who is working alone and is not in regular communication, under supervision or in proximity of other workers.

An App For Lone Workers

When one of our consultants is working alone in a remote location, after hours or in a risky situation such as a roof space, their safety is our priority. The first step is for the consultant to notify their manager that they are commencing work. They then set the App on their phone to remind them to send a message to that manager on a regular basis to say they are alright.

Depending on the job and where they are, that time frame varies and might be every 15 minutes or every 2 hours. If the manager doesn’t hear from them they know there is a potential issue and they can immediately investigate.

Of course, for jobs that are considered high risk such as a meth lab, we still send two people to work as a team.

By providing your employees with a safety App, it promotes confidence and increases their safety.
As one of our consultants said “The app gives me peace of mind when I’m working alone and I can concentrate on the job I’m doing. It makes me more efficient”

Who Could Use An App For Lone Workers?

There are many industries who could benefit from using an App that gives lone workers peace of mind. There’s no reason for a lone worker to ever feel truly alone anymore and this can lead to them changing their attitude to a job or role. Remember a lone worker refers to anyone who works alone whether it’s in a remote location or in the city but away from colleagues. Here are some industries who could benefit from using a lone worker App:

Improving Efficiency With Tablet Technology

Traditionally, one of our consultants visited a site to do an assessment and manually recorded the results. These results were then transcribed by another person into a computer where the results were used to compile a report and recommendations. This process often resulted in a number of quality checks and amendments.  Not only was this time consuming, but there is a margin for error that can occur when the information is transcribed from the notes into a computer.

Over the past 3 years, JTA has implemented Tablet Technology across all our services and in all states. This means that all our consultants who work in the field have a Tablet and they can record their results directly into our computer system and, if appropriate, even complete reports onsite. It also allows them to photograph identified hazards in ‘real time’ and then upload these photographs to the report.

Benefits Of Tablet Technology

The use of this Tablet technology has reduced our costs for doing an onsite assessment and we are proud to have passed this cost saving on to our customers. There are also other significant benefits that our customers appreciate:

The next step in this technology will be the ability to upload reports directly to our Client Portal so that they are available in a much faster timeframe and can be viewed whenever or wherever the client wishes. The JTA Client Portal has been an extremely useful tool for customers who we work with on a regular basis. It contains all the reports we have compiled for them and is filed by service, by state, by year. The Client Portal is accessed via a security password through our website and all the reports are thus available at any time and any place. If you don’t already have a login for your company please let our consultant know.

At JTA we believe that it is important to keep abreast of emerging technologies and we are continually evaluating what’s available to see if it can contribute to improving the way we conduct business.  We embrace technology if it allows us to simplify and streamline our OHS activities to provide a better customer experience.
